MMTA Distinguished Service Award - October, 2007

Barbara Collins

Barbara Collins of Port Huron has been awarded the distinguished service award by the Michigan Music Teachers association. She has been active in the music community for over thirty five years as a piano teacher, school music teacher, church musician and accompanist. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree form Central Michigan University and Permanent Professional Certification from MTNA.

She has held many positions in Port Huron MTA including president and treasurer. She is currently finishing a term of six years as Student Achievement Testing Coordinator for MMTA and has served as SAT auditions chair and concerto competition chair. She is a frequent adjudicator and speaker for teaching associations throughout the state. Barb is a member of the Port Huron Piano Trio and presents annual educational programs for schools in her area. She serves on the faculty of PHMTA summer camp and has recorded three CD's with violinist Caroline Goulding.

Barb maintains a large studio of children and adults and is dedicated to sharing her teaching experience and resource information with other teachers. MMTA has been an important part of her teaching career. The friendship, support and knowledge gained from members continues to be her source of inspiration. She urges all teachers to get involved with their local and state association.

She was the 1996 Port Huron Music Teachers Association teacher of the year. In 2004, she was honored as "Woman of Distinction" by Michigan Waterways Council of Girl Scouts for service to the community and a role model for young women.
